The WAMA Story

WAMA was created by Rodolfo Mendoza and Abigail Huster. Rodolfo, from Mexico City, has a background in business and art. Abigail, from Oregon, worked in agricultural research. We met in Oaxaca in 2016 and began a new path together.
Our cross-cultural partnership has led us both into places we never imagined.
Since 2021, that place has been Todos Santos.
The outcome is WAMA Hotel.
WAMA is our business, our art project, and our home.
Creativity is one of our core values in life and work. We wanted this project to be a place for us to stretch our own limits creatively and also for the finished hotel to inspire guests to explore their own creative process.
We have been intimately involved in every step of this project. From the search for the perfect site, the architectural design process, supervising the construction, interior design, and finally operations, every decision leading up to opening our doors in 2025 has been our own.

Where architecture and experience meet.
The architectural design began with one small idea: a bathroom with a glass wall which could open up into a small courtyard. The small courtyard idea then reminded us of James Turell’s Skyspace artworks, and we came up with the plan to put tubs in the courtyards so guests could soak and view the sky. One creative idea led to the next and soon, with the guidance of the brilliant architect Kevin Wickham, we had plans for a small hotel unlike any other.
Our love of design runs deep in the veins of WAMA. From the sun shades overhead to the hangers in the closets, every detail was an opportunity to add interest to the space. The result is the opposite of a soulless mega-resort. Each room is personal and full of soul. Real hands have left their mark…the terracotta floor tiles, the custom furniture, and even the wooden forms for the walls were handmade by Mexican artisans according to our designs.

We invite you to come and experience WAMA.
Feel the textures.
Watch the sunlight move across the walls.
